I’m very excited to welcome Amy Krone to the shop this year. You can see more of Amy’s beautiful work at www.cambiumlostarts.com
In this 6 day course, students will explore hand-split white oak & skeined willow basketry from start to finish by beginning with a whole white oak log + willow, and ending with a basket. We will deep dive into greenwood white oak processing, beginning the week by cleaving a white oak log down together, and then splitting those cleaved wedges into their individual growth rings to make usable basketry material. Using this material, we will then carve the frames for our baskets utilizing carving techniques unique to split-wood basketry**. Along the way, we will split and shave round willow rods to make flat, skeined willow weavers, discussing willow growing, harvesting and processing together. Finally, we will combine both disciplines as we weave a 10” white oak and skeined willow hen basket. This class is suitable for all levels of basket weavers so long as you are comfortable using a carving knife for long periods at a time.
*this course requires a great deal of hand strength and stamina, and is as much knife work as it is basket weaving. Students should feel comfortable using a carving knife.
Tuition is $1700 which includes all supplies
Reservations will be first come first serve.
Tools:
All tools for the class will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring their own if they have them.
