In our week together we’ll explore the foundations of greenwood spoon carving, with an emphasis on fundamental skills, practice, and developing an understanding of the material and how to work with it. We’ll start with freshly cut greenwood and use simple tools to make refined blanks ready for finish carving. Then we’ll work with knives to refine and finish carve the blanks. We’ll also have the opportunity to explore making blanks with the drawknife and bandsaw and how to maintain and care for your tools.

This class is a collaboration between Darrick Sanderson and Tim Manney and the aim is simple: to share enough knowledge, ideas, and skills to send each participant home with the inspiration to carve more and to keep learning. The extended format gives us the time to let the foundational skills deepen through repetition, individual instruction, and time. The goal is not to just learn techniques, but to practice them enough that they feel natural. And also to carve spoons, the goal is to carve a bunch of spoons.

Darrick is a wizard with the knife and axe; watching him work, it appears that all of the wood that is not spoon just gives up in front of his axe blows and falls effortlessly away. An electrician by trade and a storyteller at heart, he is one of the most skillful and creative spoon carvers in the world. He rarely teaches, so this is a great opportunity to learn from one of the world’s best.

Tim has been carving since 2004 when he set up a chopping block in a little grove of hemlocks behind his college dorm and went to work, led by a copy of Wille Sundqvist’s book “Swedish Carving Techniques.” He’s been carving ever since and it’s still the most fun he has doing woodworking.

No previous carving experience is required. The class is intentionally structured to give beginners a solid foundation while offering experienced carvers the time and attention to deepen their understanding of the fundamentals. With two instructors there will be plenty of one on one attention.

Tools: We will communicate more specifically to those who have signed up before the class, but this list is a general starting place.

- Sloyd knife (Morakniv 106 is the standard)

- Hook Knife

- Carving Axe (if you have one)

Students should bring a basic carving knife like a Morakniv 120 or 106. Other tools will be provided, but bring your carving hooks and gouges if you have them. Contact Tim at tmanney@gmail.com for more specific tool recommendations.

Tuition $1700 due upon enrollment

Reservations will be first come first serve. Tuition is due upon enrollment.

COVID Policy

We recommend each student traveling for the workshops carry travel insurance in the event their trip is cancelled due to contracting the virus. In the unfortunate situation a class is cancelled or missed due to illness, the class will be rescheduled not refunded.
