Build a Three-Legged Perch Stool: Foundations in Chairmaking
This five-day course is designed for both beginner and seasoned woodworkers, focussing on the core techniques essential to Windsor chairmaking.
Unlike full Windsor chair classes, where many parts are pre-made to ensure a completed chair by weeks end, this course allows students to engage with each step of the process—from raw material to finished piece. It;s an ideal starting point for those who want to build their skills methodically or those who may have built a chair or two in classes, but want to buff up on the fundamentals to feel more confident in their own workshops.
By building a three-legged perch stool, students will gain hands-on experience with the essential processes that form the backbone of Windsor chairmaking:
● Turning at the Lathe: Learn spindle-turning techniques to shape the stool legs with precision and efficiency.
● Drilling and Reaming: Practice laying out and executing compound-angle joinery by drilling and reaming the leg mortises accurately.
● Precision Joinery: Fit and size tapered and straight mortise-and-tenon joints using boththe lathe and tapered tenon cutters to precisely size the tenons for strong, long-lastingjoinery that won’t wobble or budge.
● Seat Carving: Carve a solid pine seat using drawknives, inshaves, spokeshaves,
travishers, and scrapers with an emphasis on comfort and clean shaping.
Students will leave with a completed three-legged stool and a deeper understanding of Windsor
chairmaking techniques, ready to take on more advanced projects.
No prior experience required—just a willingness to learn.
Tuition is $1550 which includes all materials and most tools. Please visit the Student tool list to learn more.
