Carving Oak 17th-century Style Patterns
This 3-day class has no project - it’s about exploring period carving techniques. We’ll go through a series of exercises, each building skills in sequence. Drawing ideas and inspiration from photos of period works and carved examples, each student will carve at least six different patterns in the first two days. Day three we bite off something bigger, more involved - either a chest panel or a large box front. Often that segment of the class results in everyone doing something different - there’s plenty to keep us busy.
There’s no experience necessary, just a willingness to dive in and learn about a carving style that has kept me occupied for nearly 40 years. For students who’ve carved before we can tailor the work to push you further along, there’s always new patterns to carve. We’ll be carving quartersawn red oak, the material is included in the tuition.
For tools - bring what gouges you have, a V-tool is a must. I’ll have a couple of extras, as well as some gouges - but I don’t have “sets” of tools for everybody. Attached is a PDF showing the shapes & sizes I use a lot. But don’t run out and buy them all. We can form designs according to what you have. I’ll have some extras, but bring what you have and we’ll go from there. Missing from that list is the V-tool. Mine is marked #15, 12mm (by Swiss-made) it's about 45-50 degrees.
ruler

Mallet - for carving, round, square - I use a round wooden mallet
